Most breeders, at one time or another, will need a nebulizer to treat their cats and kittens. These are simple directions to build one at home. |
You may ask yourself, "what is a nebulizer"? A nebulizer is a "tool" that we can use to better treat URI's, sinus infections and even pneumonia by getting the meds right where we need them, the lungs. |
The tools you will need are: a power drill and a spade bit. |
This is a one inch spade bit. You may beg, borrow but do not steal one, from anyone you know that does contruction work or woodworking. This is the easiest tool to use to cut the hole in the end of the plastic storage bin. |
You will need to buy a plastic storage bin like this one. This is a Rubbermaid bin and the top actually locks on. |
The nebulizer, tubing, and medication cup, are next. |
I have use duct tape and taped one end of the T piece to prevent the meds from coming out the other end. We want all the medication to go straight into our chamber. |
Now, that we have everything we need to put one together, the next pictures will show you exactly how to do it. |
Holding the T piece on the end of the plastic bin, trace around it with a pencil. |
Placing your spade bit in the center of the circle, slowly drill through the plastic, creating a perfect 1 inch circle. |
I cut a 3 inch piece of duct tap to tape over the hole. I used a sharp knife and crisscross cut the tape where it covered the hole and turned it towards the inside of the box. This will create a tight fit for the T piece to fit into. Pictured below. |
This is what it should look like, all put together, with a cat inside. I also like to put a towel in the bottom because it will absorb the moisture that will accumulate in the chamber. No, the cat will NOT suffocate. The nebulizer is actually a small compresser that is putting out air. |
These are the medicines that I use. All can be bought at your local farm store or ordered on line through KV VEt or Revival. Just watch your expiration dates on the Tylan and Biosol. The Tylan 200 is an injectable antibiotic. Biosol is a oral medication used in cows and pigs ;-) and sterile water. I use 3cc of Biosol, 1 cc of Tylan 200 and about 1 -2 cc of sterile water in the cup. (see arrow in next picture) |

When you are ready, turn on the nebulizer and set a timer for 30 minutes. I turn the nebulizer off when the medicine cup is empty but leave the cat in the chamber for the full 30 minutes. The chamber will be so full of medicated air, that it will be very foggy inside. I also cover my whole chamber with a heavy towel because these bins are not totally air tight and it will leak. Some people will tape around the tops edges to prevent leakage. I personally don't because I do not feel that it will make that much of a difference. You will notice when you do take the cat out, that they are coated ;-) along with the inside to the chamber. I treat twice a day for at least 3 days, depending on how severe the URI or sinus infection is. When I am confident that I have treated long enough, I will then bathe the cat. |

Cleaning. . . . . it is important to wash out the T piece and the medicine cup with hot soapy water after each use. You do not want to be nebulizing with old medicines from the prior treatment, plus it will help your equipment to last longer. Replace T and medicine cup when discoloration begins. I also wash the whole chamber once a day, with hot soapy water. You will be surprised at how much the medications stick to the inside of the chamber. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to email me and I will do my best to answer them. If I can't, I will find someone that can ;-) |
